Look at your dog and then think hard about the reason you are looking to give him/her up. If the reason is your or another household member has developed severe allergies, you are physically unable to care for your Shiba due to injury or illness, or you are loosing your home and cannot take the dog with you the best thing for your dog may be to surrender him/her to rescue.
Problems like the dog won't listen, won't house train, is chewing, the dog is alone too much, he/she snapped at you or your children and your having a baby and won't have anytime for the dog anymore are issues that 99% of the time can be worked through with time, patience, training and a little bit effort on your part. If you need advise on how to resolve issues such as these please contact us at intake@savingshibas.com as soon as possible. We can offer training and management tips to make life with your Shiba happier and more manageable.
If you are sure that you are unwilling/unable to work through whatever the issue is, or if you are just unable to keep your dog, please contact us as soon as possible. There are two options SIRA offers families looking to re-home their Shibas.
Surrendering your Shiba to SIRA
Surrendering your Shiba to SIRA will give your dog the maximum amount of exposure and guarantee them the best possible forever home match. Your dog will be released to SIRA and go to live with a foster family. We carefully screen all our applicants to make sure they are prepared to bring a Shiba into their home and then work with them to create perfect match with our available foster dogs. When you surrender your dog you will have no further contact or knowledge of where your dog is placed. Please completely read about the surrender process below before submitting the Surrender Application.
Surrender Application
Fill out our intake surrender form and upload photos of your dog at the bottom of the form. Pictures are mandatory for surrenders. This form will give us an organized history of your dog's behavior, medical background and the reasons you are looking to surrender him/her. The form must be completely filled out. If it is not we will not consider your dog for placement in our program. After your surrender form has been reviewed the intake coordinator will contact you about additional information and setting up a time to have your dog evaluated by one of SIRA's volunteers.

Intake Evaluation
Before we can place your dog in our fostering program it must go through an intake temperament test. One of our volunteers will visit you and your dog in your home to perform a standard behavior evaluation. Please make sure only household members are present during the visit. Your dog is already going to know something is up when a stranger starts engaging him/her. Having more than the normal people present could upset your dog and skew the test results. Have a few of your dog's favorite toys, cookies and high value treats available for the volunteer to test your dog with. If your dog passes we will consider him/her for placement in our foster program.
Placement in Foster Care
Shiba Inu Rescue Association is an all-volunteer organization and every dog is fostered in volunteer's homes. As such foster space is limited so it could take some time before a foster space opens up for your dog. When a foster home opens up the intake coordinator will contact you to arrange a pick up/drop off time with one of SIRA's volunteers. Be sure to bring all of your dog's items; toys, bowls, collar, leash, food, treats, flea/tick heart worm medication, other medication, all medical records and microchip information. Be sure to say your goodbyes before it comes time for your dog to leave and try not to cry during the pick up/drop off. Doing so will upset your dog and make his/her transition into foster care much harder. You will sign a form relinquishing your ownership of the dog to SIRA. Though you will not have any further contact with or knowledge of where your dog is placed, rest assured we will take very good care of your dog and find him/her the best possible forever home.
Request a Courtesy Listing
SIRA also offers courtesy listings to families that have a dog who did not pass the intake evaluation, are too far away to be transferred into foster care or would prefer to place their Shiba themselves. Courtesy listings are posted on SIRA's front page, Petfinder.com, 1-800-Pets.com and PETS911.com. Dogs with courtesy listings are required to be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations.
Courtesy Listing Form
Fill out our courtesy listing form and upload photos of your dog at the bottom of the form. The form must be completely filled out. If it is not we will not consider your dog for a courtesy listing. After your form has been reviewed the intake coordinator will contact you about additional information and posting your dog on our website.

Evaluate Potential Adopters
Families who have chosen to have a courtesy listing instead of surrendering their dog will be responsible for all parts of the adoption process themselves. There will be an email link in your dog's bio so interested individuals may contact you directly. They will not fill out the SIRA adoption application and you will not have access to our applicants. We encourage you to visit potential adopter's homes with all family members present to be sure that they will provide a loving and nurturing environment for your Shiba. Please feel free to use SIRA's home visit report as a guide when evaluating potential adopters. We also encourage you to charge some sort of an adoption fee. This will help prevent you from getting inquiries from people who have not fully considered what it means to take on the responsibilities of dog ownership and are simply acting on impulse because they see a "free" dog. It is fine if you decide in the end not to charge the new family an adoption fee.
Adopt out your dog
Once you have found the perfect family for your dog be sure to send an email to adoption@savingshibas.com to let us know to remove your dog's listing from the website. After 6 months your dog will automatically be removed from our site. If your dog has not yet been placed and you would still like to have a courtesy listing please send an email to the above address. When your dog goes to their new home be sure to send all of their belongings with them; toys, bowls, collar, leash, food, treats, flea/tick heart worm medication, other medication, all medical records and microchip information.
